Tasmania is one of the smaller intern markets in Australia, but it offers something genuinely distinct: a broad clinical experience across a compact health system, with the option of a rural generalist pathway built into the internship itself. If you are considering Tasmania, this guide covers exactly what you need to apply.
This guide is based on the current Tasmanian Department of Health Medical Intern Applications process for the 2027 clinical year.
Important dates to remember when applying for medical internship this year:
| Date | |
| Tuesday 5 May 2026 | Applications open |
| Thursday 4 June 2026 | Applications closed |
| Wednesday 15 July 2026 | MInitial offers are made |
This guide is based on the current Tasmanian Department of Health Medical Intern Applications process and applies to Tasmanian medical internship only. We have separate guides for Victoria and New South Wales.
One application, three sites
The Tasmanian Health Service (THS) is a statewide system, managed directly by the Tasmanian Department of Health. There is no separate allocation body, no network system, and no complicated pathway matrix. You submit one application and rank three sites in your preferred order.
The three sites are:
- Royal Hobart Hospital (Hobart)
- Launceston General Hospital (Launceston)
- North West Regional Hospital and Mersey Community Hospital (North West Region)
You must rank all three. Your allocation is based on your ranked preferences, your priority category, and available positions at each site.
Check your priority category first
Tasmania is one of the few states that requires a CV as part of the application, but it does not prescribe a specific template. That gives you more flexibility than Victoria, but it also means you need to exercise some judgment about what to include.
- List your clinical rotations clearly, including the specialty, site, and duration of each.
- Include research, leadership, or community experience if you have it, especially if your clinical sections are thin.
- Make sure the name on your CV matches your other documents exactly. Any variation will need to be supported by a change of name certificate.
- Do not exaggerate anything. Pre-employment checks are conducted before you start.
No written statement addressing selection criteria is required. You also do not need to provide referees at the online application stage.
Here is a full list of what you need to submit:
- Completed online application via the Tasmanian Department of Health portal
- CV or resume (no prescribed template)
- Intern Placement Number (IPN), provided by your university
- AHPRA provisional registration (or application in progress)
- Ranked site preferences (Hobart, Launceston, North West Region)
Your priority category
Tasmania gives priority to local graduates first. If you trained at a Tasmanian university and are an Australian citizen or permanent resident, you are in the strongest position. Interstate graduates are considered in subsequent categories, and international students after that.
If you are applying from interstate, it is still worth applying. Positions do go to interstate applicants, but it helps to go in with realistic expectations about how the priority system works.
What you actually need to submit
If you are drawn to a career in rural medicine or general practice, Tasmania has something worth knowing about. The state offers a small number of dedicated intern places on the Tasmanian Rural Generalist Program.
This is not just a rural rotation. It is a structured pathway where a 13-week rural GP placement is built into your intern year as a core component, alongside your standard hospital terms. If you have previously lived or worked in a rural Tasmanian community, you may be placed there, subject to availability.
If this pathway interests you, indicate it clearly in your application. Dedicated places are limited, and it is a separate selection process, not a rotation preference.
Receiving and accepting your offer
Initial offers go out nationally from Wednesday 15 July 2026. Once you receive a Tasmanian offer, you have two working days to accept or decline. If you miss that window, the offer lapses.
A couple of additional things worth knowing:
- Tasmania does not allow deferral. If you accept but later cannot start on the specified date, you will need to decline your offer.
- Joint applications are available if you and a partner are both applying for Tasmanian intern positions. You need to indicate this in your application and provide your partner’s full name. Joint applications are not exempt from the ballot and do not guarantee you will be placed at the same site.
Last updated: April 2026. Always verify requirements directly with the Tasmanian Department of Health, as processes and dates are subject to change each year.
